Federal and Triad law enforcement leaders announced Wednesday the results of Operation Piedmont Pipeline, a three-month surge operation targeting firearms trafficking and drug activity across the Piedmont Triad. The briefing in Greensboro brought together U.S. Attorney Dan Bishop, ATF Director Robert Cekada, Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal, High Point Police Chief Curtis Cheeks III, Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson, Rockingham County Sheriff Billy Parker and Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough.

ATF Director Cekada said the operation focused on firearms trafficking and drug activity in Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem and surrounding areas. Participating agencies said the investigation also involved violent crime and illegal narcotics trafficking.

Rockingham County's sheriff was among the local leaders who joined federal officials as the multi-agency results were detailed. Authorities said the surge approach is aimed at disrupting networks that move illegal guns and drugs into Piedmont communities.
