Henry County weighs $2.6 million FY2027 budget increase after state funding changes

henrycountyva.gov | Aug 15, 2026 9:51 AM

Henry County supervisors are considering a $2,606,893 increase to the adopted Fiscal Year 2027 budget after Virginia funding changes created new education and compensation requirements.

The county said the proposal would increase the total FY2027 budget from $231,528,674 to $234,135,567. The school division budget would rise from $117,973,744 to $120,580,637, with the county reporting that $2,152,791 in additional state school funding also raises the required local contribution by $615,361.

Because the school budget change exceeds one percent, the county scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. The proposal also reflects a state-funded 4 percent salary increase for school positions and a possible 3.5 percent adjustment for county and Department of Social Services employees.

County staff recommended using $225,000 already reserved during the budget process and delaying several planned hires to help absorb the added costs. The board also approved an $838,000 sales-tax-fund appropriation for electrical switchgear replacements at Fieldale-Collinsville Middle School and Laurel Park Middle School, adding a direct facilities component to the broader budget discussion.

Residents should review the county\'s posted agenda and hearing materials before attending; the official announcement gives the Aug. 25 date and 6 p.m. time but does not identify a hearing room in the notice.
