MHC Says Farewell to a Family That Gave Back
MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Sometimes, you don't realize what you have until someone else hires it.
Martinsville-Henry County is preparing to say goodbye to one of its well-known families as Ruthanne Duffy heads west to become the new Athletic Director at Western Wyoming College. The move also means the community will lose her husband, Lt. Matt Duffy of the Henry County Sheriff's Office, and their family.
For many in the area, the announcement is bittersweet.
Ruthanne Duffy is no stranger to local athletics. She previously served in athletic leadership roles in Martinsville-Henry County and even stepped in to serve as interim athletic director. Despite her experience and familiarity with the local community, she was ultimately not selected for the permanent position.
Now, another college has recognized the leadership qualities many here have watched for years.
Western Wyoming College announced that Duffy will assume the role of Athletic Director beginning in Fall 2026. She brings more than 14 years of collegiate athletics experience and will oversee Mustang Athletics with an emphasis on student-athlete success, academic achievement, building relationships, and strengthening community engagement.
The move marks the end of an era for the Duffy family in Martinsville-Henry County.
Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis told Star News the departure of Lt. Matt Duffy is "a huge loss" for the Sheriff's Office. Matt Duffy has built a respected career in law enforcement and has been a familiar face in the community through his service with the department.
Friends and colleagues say the Duffys have made an impact far beyond athletics and law enforcement, becoming deeply involved in the community and earning the respect of those they have worked alongside.
While Western Wyoming College is gaining an experienced athletic administrator, Martinsville-Henry County is losing a family that has invested years in serving its schools, students, and community.
Sometimes opportunity doesn't come from your hometown—it comes from someone else who recognizes your value.
