No Drugs Allowed Behind Bars: Rockingham County Jail Search Turns Up Narcotics and Contraband

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Rockingham County officials are sending a blunt message to anyone trying to sneak drugs into the county jail: don't.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office conducted a coordinated random search of housing areas inside the Rockingham County Detention Facility Thursday morning, Aug. 13, resulting in the seizure of illegal narcotics and other contraband.

The sheriff’s office said charges are forthcoming, while investigators work to determine how the prohibited items made their way inside the facility.

The operation involved personnel from the Detention Division, Detectives/Narcotics, Special Response Team and Patrol.

Officials said searches of the detention facility will continue regularly as part of efforts to keep drugs and other contraband away from both inmates and jail employees.

Sheriff Billy Parker said the same determination being used to keep drugs out of the jail will be applied to people bringing illegal drugs into Rockingham County.

“This same determination will be brought down tenfold on those who bring illegal drugs into Rockingham County to sell and poison our citizens and our youth out on the streets,” Parker said.

The sheriff’s office said anyone involved in transporting, delivering or assisting in bringing contraband into the detention facility will be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The investigation into how the narcotics and contraband entered the jail remains active.

Inside the jail or out on the street, Sheriff Parker says the message is the same: if you're moving illegal drugs, law enforcement wants to know about it.
