ROAD RAGE GOES FROM BAD TO WORSE: I-77 SHOOTING LEADS TO FOUR FELONY CHARGES
CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — A Saturday morning road-rage incident on Interstate 77 apparently went from angry drivers to gunfire, leaving two sisters injured and a Charlotte man facing multiple felony charges.
Virginia State Police said 61-year-old Richard T. Ariviello of Charlotte, North Carolina, was taken into custody following the shooting on northbound I-77 in Carroll County.
Troopers were called around 8:50 a.m. Saturday, August 22, after receiving a report of a shooting near the three-mile marker.
According to VSP, the shooting followed a reported road rage incident.
Police allege that shots were fired at a vehicle occupied by the two sisters. Both women were injured in the shooting.
Ariviello was reportedly driving a Mercedes-Benz that left the scene after the shooting.
That getaway apparently didn't last very long.
Law enforcement stopped the Mercedes at Exit 19 on Interstate 77, and Ariviello was taken into custody.
He has been charged with:
Malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle
Shooting from a vehicle
Maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim
Use of a firearm while committing a felony
The investigation remains ongoing.
What started as a reported argument on the highway ended with two people injured, a vehicle stopped by police and four serious felony charges.
A reminder that road rage is a really bad time to decide you've got something to prove — especially when a firearm gets involved.
