Rockingham County Schools has approved a proposed four-year capital outlay request to send to county commissioners, citing $21.723 million in facility repairs, $1 million per year for zonal repairs and a $2.4 million local match for a $7.5 million U.S. Department of Energy grant. The total request was described as approximately $28 million over four years, and commissioners are scheduled to take it up Nov. 2.

The board also received an update on the new Regional Elementary School project, including asbestos abatement under way with demolition to follow; no construction contract award or project cost was presented. Facilities updates noted a notice to proceed for the McMichael High School parking lot project and an approximately $112,000 quote for a needed Wentworth Elementary cooling tower, without a purchase approval reported.

Other funding and procurement updates included confirmation of a $627,000 school resource officer grant for 13 positions, with safety-equipment grant results still pending, and a $10 million federal Head Start grant authorized to proceed. The facilities committee reported roofing contractors and architectural firms were being contacted to prepare for the Head Start project, and policy revisions were approved covering construction bidding, bidder prequalification, board contracts and vendor lists.
