Surry County will hold its annual household hazardous waste and pesticide collection event Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy. The drop-off is free and open to county households, and no commercial business waste is accepted.

County officials said the event takes paint, thinners, solvents, pesticides, gasoline, acids and pool chemicals. Items that will not be accepted include ammunition, explosives, radioactive or unlabeled materials, medicine and syringes, propane cylinders, infectious waste, car batteries and fluorescent bulbs.

Residents are asked to label all containers, close all lids tightly and cushion glass bottles. The event is sponsored by Surry County Public Works, North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Surry County and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. More information is available through the Surry County Public Works Department at 336-401-8376.
