The Big Chair in uptown Martinsville traded its familiar furniture-showcase look for spiders and spider webs as costumed children gathered for an early start to Halloween. The city's Youth Advisory Committee decorated the landmark for the occasion, adding a spooky backdrop as trick-or-treaters gathered during the annual Uptown Martinsville Trick-or-Treat event on Oct. 30.

The free event ran from 4 to 6 p.m. and invited children 12 and younger to collect treats from participating merchants and neighboring organizations. Martinsville Uptown organized the event and announced street closures to help protect families as they visited businesses.

The decorating project gave the city's youth committee a visible role in the celebration. According to the city, the committee gives local students a voice in municipal government while helping them develop leadership skills and take part in community service. Standing 21 feet 3 inches tall at Furniture Heritage Plaza, the Big Chair honors Martinsville and Henry County's furniture-making heritage; the 4,400-pound metal chair was installed in December 2020 and replicates the chair built to commemorate Bassett Furniture's 100th anniversary.
