Work is under way on a long-discussed water line extension along Fairmont Drive in Bassett, where the Henry County Public Service Authority awarded a $309,300 contract to C.W. Cauley and Son Inc. Crews have begun excavating for the project, which has been discussed for more than a decade after residents raised concerns about the quality of water from their wells.

The project includes approximately 2,900 linear feet of new 6-inch and smaller water lines, along with appurtenances and related work, and will be paid for from existing funds in the PSA's capital budget rather than outside sources. PSA Vice Chairman Marcus Stone said the project is important not only because it expands access to public water but because of the concerns residents have raised about the water from their wells.

Residents approached the PSA board in February urging action on the project. Construction is expected to take approximately six months, with a definitive schedule set after a notice to proceed is issued and a schedule is agreed upon with the contractor. The PSA said it will provide more information to residents as construction proceeds, including how to apply for a water tap and establish service.
