Python Plays With Fire at Bedford Middle School — Tortoise Dies in Overnight Blaze
BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. — An eight-foot python apparently decided to break out of its classroom enclosure overnight — and things went downhill from there.
Firefighters were called to Forest Middle School around 12:45 a.m. for a reported fire alarm and arrived to find water pouring from the second floor, fire visible inside the building and smoke coming from the windows.
According to the Bedford County Fire Marshal's Office, the snake's enclosure lid was not completely secured. Investigators believe the python escaped, knocked over a heat lamp and sparked the fire.
Fire crews quickly realized they had another problem when they entered the smoke-filled second floor and were greeted by the eight-foot python.
Fortunately, the snake wasn't looking for a fight.
Firefighters safely secured the python in a temporary holding area until its owner arrived and returned it to its enclosure.
Firefighters battle blaze and ventilation problems
Forest firefighters deployed a significant amount of equipment to reach the classroom.
Engine 51 arrived to find water flowing from the second floor and requested additional units. Crews established a water supply and began making entry while Ladder 5 stretched approximately 200 feet of pre-connected hose, along with a 100-foot high-rise pack, to reach the fire room.
Heavy smoke had filled the second floor, as well as portions of the first floor and two wings of the school. Crews said ventilation became a major challenge and additional ventilation fans were brought in to clear the building.
Once the fire was extinguished, ladder crews shut down the sprinkler system to stop the continued flow of water.
Animals inside classroom
Several animals were reportedly housed in the classroom when the fire broke out.
Officials said a tortoise died in the fire.
The python, however, survived the ordeal and was safely returned to its enclosure.
The fire also caused significant water damage. Eight classrooms were affected, according to the fire department.
Bedford County Public Schools was on scene working with cleanup contractors and developing a plan to relocate the affected classroom to another part of the school if necessary.
The Bedford County Fire Investigator is handling the investigation into the cause of the fire.
For now, the leading theory is remarkably simple: the lid wasn't secured, the python got loose, the heat lamp got knocked over and an ordinary school night turned into a full-blown fire response.
Apparently, this is why they make lids for snake tanks.
