SWAT Raid in Bassett: Meth, Gun and Four Detained — Two Face Charges

BASSETT, Va. — A narcotics investigation sparked by complaints about suspected drug activity near Brookshire Apartments has led to a SWAT raid, the seizure of suspected methamphetamine and a firearm, and the arrest of two people.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team executed a narcotics-related search warrant at approximately 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at a residence in the 9100 block of Fairystone Park Highway in Bassett.

The investigation began after the Sheriff's Office received an increase in calls and complaints about suspected drug activity in the area, particularly around the Brookshire Apartments.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office VICE Division and Narcotics Interdiction Unit began working together on the investigation.

Deputies eventually developed evidence indicating that methamphetamine was allegedly being distributed from the residence, leading investigators to obtain a search warrant.

When SWAT officers and investigators arrived, they found four people — three men and one woman — inside the residence. All four were detained while officers searched the home and adjoining structures.

Investigators said they seized:

Suspected methamphetamine Drug paraphernalia consistent with narcotics distribution A firearm Several electronic devices and other evidence

The electronic devices raised additional concerns unrelated to the original drug investigation.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, one of the people detained was identified as a registered sex offender. Investigators seized the electronic devices and said they will undergo forensic examination to determine whether additional criminal offenses occurred.

Two Arrested

Two people were arrested and charged following the search.

Jeral Max Sunderland Jr., 62, was charged with:

Possession of a Schedule I/II drug Possession of a Schedule I/II drug while possessing a firearm

Sunderland was ordered held without bond.

Deidre Chaney Cox, 54, was charged with:

Possession of a Schedule I/II drug Possession of a Schedule I/II drug while possessing a firearm

Cox was also ordered held without bond.

The investigation remains active, and authorities say additional charges could be filed as investigators examine the seized evidence and conduct forensic examinations of the electronic devices.

The Sheriff's Office thanked residents who continue to report suspected criminal activity, saying information from the community remains an important part of identifying and addressing illegal activity throughout Henry County.

A few complaints about suspected drug activity turned into a late-night SWAT operation — and investigators say they're not finished looking at what they found.
