A planned Duke Energy natural-gas complex in Davidson and Davie counties is drawing organized opposition, with protesters set to gather outside a public meeting in Lexington.

Duke Energy's plans include a pair of gas-fired power plants in Davie County, a liquefied methane gas storage facility in Davidson County and a pipeline under the Yadkin River to move gas between them. On Thursday, the utility is hosting a drop-in open house from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Reeds United Methodist Church at 4731 W. Old U.S. 64 in Lexington, with community speakers scheduled from 6 p.m. onward, and protesters are expected to gather outside. The environmental group Appalachian Voices listed its concerns about the project in a press release, and an earlier open house Tuesday at Davidson-Davie Community College in Mocksville also drew an exterior protest.

Community members across the two counties are weighing the project's economic promises against environmental concerns as the review process continues.
