Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his tour Saturday night during his first concert since the fallout, telling fans at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field that he was sorry for the difficult decisions and wanted his shows to remain a place of unity.
“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I am so, so sorry,” Sheeran told the crowd. He said he never wanted to disappoint fans or become an “activist musician,” but found himself in the middle of a debate involving freedom of speech and the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Sheeran also addressed the humanitarian situation directly, saying the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel was horrific while describing the devastation in Gaza as catastrophic and saying civilian suffering cannot be ignored.
The remarks came after Macklemore was removed as an opening act following pro-Palestinian comments during a Sept. 5 performance at MetLife Stadium. Macklemore said venues had objected to his continued participation, while Sheeran has said the decision was made by the tour promoter after venues threatened to pull upcoming shows.
Several other supporting acts subsequently withdrew from Sheeran’s tour.
Outside Lincoln Financial Field, dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered before Saturday night’s concert. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and carried signs criticizing Macklemore’s removal and what they described as censorship.
Sheeran told the Philadelphia crowd that he wanted his concerts to be a “safe space for everyone,” including people who hold opposing views.
For Sheeran, Saturday night marked a return to the stage under considerably different circumstances — with the concert itself becoming part of a much larger public debate over music, politics and freedom of expression
