By Oct. 30, the Town of Vinton says, new traffic calming measures will go in at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Poplar Street to curb a high number of speeders. Town officials published results of a six-day traffic study last Wednesday, finding almost 70 percent of drivers traveling westbound on Cleveland Avenue went over the posted speed limit of 25 mph.
Town Manager Pete Peters said some drivers were in excess of 15 to 20 miles an hour over the limit, calling that alarming. Additionally, 7 percent of those 9,500 drivers went 10 or more miles per hour over the speed limit. Sgt. William Trey Boyd with Vinton Police said the force is doing a lot more enforcement, and that officers are usually out there two to three times a day.
The town will add new speed cushions and Halo signs, which are flashing signs displaying the speed limit, for a temporary period. Peters explained that the cushions still allow vehicles to travel a safe posted speed limit but keep them from excessive speeds, and he said the town will conduct a traffic study afterward to decide what comes next for the intersection. Many residents complained and asked for a four-way stop, but Peters said that idea is not possible after consulting with VDOT engineers, who suggested it would encourage more accidents at the intersection because of the volume of traffic.
