Virginia corridor roadwatch shifts into Memorial Day travel mode

Virginia corridor roadwatch shifts into Memorial Day travel mode

VDOT is moving into its Memorial Day weekend travel pattern, a change that matters for Martinsville, Henry County, Danville, Roanoke, and the larger Southside-to-Blue Ridge corridor.

The agency says many highway work zones and temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia will be suspended from noon Friday, May 22, 2026, until noon Tuesday, May 26. That pause should reduce some holiday-weekend construction friction on major routes.

The notice does not mean every work zone disappears. VDOT says semi-permanent work zones may remain in place, and the Salem District roadwatch still lists active impacts on Route 220, Route 58, I-81, and secondary roads through Henry, Patrick, Roanoke, and nearby counties.

Drivers leaving the Star News broadcast region for the mountains, lakes, beaches, or family trips should still check 511 before departure and again before returning. The practical takeaway is simple: expect fewer temporary lane closures, but do not assume major project areas are clear.
