Mayo River State Park Plan Approved — Now Henry County Wants the Money to Build It

HENRY COUNTY, Va. — The vision for Mayo River State Park has officially moved from the planning stage to the “now somebody needs to pay for it” stage.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation formally adopted the Mayo River State Park Master Plan on July 27, marking a major milestone in the long-awaited development of the park.

The master plan provides a roadmap for transforming the Mayo River property into a fully developed state park, including future opportunities for recreation, conservation and education.

Henry County officials say the Commonwealth has already acquired the property and completed the planning process. Now, they are asking the Virginia General Assembly to provide the funding necessary to begin putting the plan into action.

County officials say investment from the state would allow work to begin moving the property toward full operation as a state park.

“This is an important step forward for the Mayo River State Park,” said Jim Adams, chairman of the Henry County Board of Supervisors. “We now have a plan for what this park can become. The next step is getting the funding in place to make that vision a reality.”

The master plan establishes the long-term vision for the park and provides state officials with a framework for future development.

For Henry County, the message to Richmond is pretty simple: The plan is done. The property is owned. Now send the money.

The county is encouraging members of the General Assembly to make funding for implementation of the Mayo River State Park Master Plan a priority.
