Rockingham County residents who want to help report severe weather can attend a free SKYWARN spotter training session this month in Reidsville.
Rockingham County Emergency Services says the class will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the Emergency Services Building, 150 Justice Center Drive, Reidsville. The county says the training is free, open to the public and does not require prior registration.
National Weather Service meteorologists will lead the session, with instruction on storm development, storm structure and how to identify and report hazardous conditions such as tornadoes, hail, damaging winds and flooding. The county says trained spotters help provide ground-level information that can support warnings and emergency response.
- Who should consider it: Weather-aware residents, amateur radio operators, neighborhood leaders, public safety volunteers and anyone who wants to report severe weather responsibly.
- What to know: The training is free and open to the public at 150 Justice Center Drive.
- Why it matters: Reliable local reports can help fill gaps between radar data and what is actually happening on the ground.
Residents should use the county notice for final details before attending and should never put themselves in danger to report weather conditions.
