Winston-Salem begins construction on new MLK Center computer labs

Winston-Salem says construction began Monday, Sept. 28, on two new learning spaces at the Martin L. King Jr. Community Center: a Computer Training Lab and a Computer Arts Music Lab.

The Recreation and Parks Department describes the work as a partnership with WinstonNet and Digital Bridges Forsyth. The city says construction is expected to take approximately 120 days. The center is at 2001 Pittsburg Avenue, according to the city's community-center information.

The city's earlier design-build scope describes a specialty computer lab focused on digital literacy, internet skills, cybersecurity, website development, programming and network management. That scope calls for at least 15 student computers and says the advanced training would be available to residents citywide at no cost. A separate computer arts music lab is planned as a creative learning space for preteens and teens.

The Sept. 28 announcement marks the start of the build-out, but the city has not posted a public opening date for either lab. Residents should check the Recreation and Parks project page for construction updates and future program information as the work continues.
