Danville water-line inspections may bring crews to meters

Danville Utilities is telling customers what to expect if utility crews appear near water meters in the coming months.

The city says the work is part of a federally required Lead Service Line Inventory Project. Crews will visit properties to identify the material of water service lines on the utility side, the customer side or both sides of the meter. Door hangers are expected to be placed about two weeks before scheduled work.

PDC of Greensboro has been contracted for the inspections, with Danville Utilities employees assisting. The city says the work usually involves a small test hole near the meter, often about 2 feet by 2 feet, and most inspections take less than an hour.

  • What to know: Crews generally work from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and disturbed landscaping is expected to be restored the same day.
  • Who is affected: Danville water customers, property owners, tenants and residents who receive a door hanger.
  • Why it matters: Federal rules require water systems to identify lead, galvanized or unknown service lines by October 2027.

Danville Utilities says any replacement plan for lead, galvanized or unknown lines will be presented to City Council in spring 2027, and no replacement-cost decisions have been made. Primary account holders can request recorded service-line material information through the Danville Water Treatment Plant at 434-799-6473.
