Greensboro's Sonnet Fest brings Shakespeare performances to Downtown Greenway Aug. 7-9

Greensboro's second annual Sonnet Fest will bring free Shakespeare-inspired performances to the western branch of the Downtown Greenway from Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026.

The city says performances begin at 6 p.m. each night. Creative Greensboro is presenting the festival with little independent theatre, Scrapmettle, Shared Radiance Performing Arts and Greensboro Parks and Recreation.

The format turns the Greenway into a moving performance space. Four groups will be assigned to public-art installations and perform at the same time, while audience members rotate between locations to see the different presentations built around Shakespeare's sonnets 51-103.

The performances are free, with donations accepted. Audience members are asked to preregister so they can receive a festival map and the event information needed to follow the rotating format. Friday and Sunday performances will also feature a fifth ensemble made up of residents of Peacehaven Farm.

The updated city release places the festival along the western Downtown Greenway rather than the older calendar listing's Greensboro Cultural Center location. Readers should use the current city release and registration information when planning where to meet and how to move between performances.
