— A suspect allegedly decided to bring a box cutter-style knife into a confrontation with law enforcement Monday. Unfortunately for Deputy Logan Grubbs’ K-9 partner, Zajo, the encounter left the four-legged deputy with multiple facial lacerations.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said September 28, 2026, that deputies were assisting Virginia State Police in locating and apprehending a suspect connected to an investigation when the suspect allegedly used a box cutter-style knife to injure Zajo.
The injured K-9 was rushed to a veterinarian for treatment. Thankfully, Zajo is expected to make a full recovery.
While Zajo is now on the road to recovery, the incident serves as a reminder that law enforcement K-9s put themselves in harm’s way while helping protect the public — often without the benefit of a badge, body armor, or a paycheck.
The sheriff’s office thanked everyone who has called, commented, and offered prayers for Zajo, saying the outpouring of support is appreciated.
Virginia State Police will release additional information about the incident. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said it will share updates as more details become available, including information about any charges.
For now, the community is pulling for Zajo — and wishing Deputy Grubbs’ partner a speedy recovery.
