Charlie Vaughn generally avoids the public eye, rarely speaking at meetings or otherwise entering the spotlight, but that changed when the retired construction company owner was honored as a guiding force behind the Spencer's redevelopment in Mount Airy. He received the AGORA Award during a meeting of the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners last Thursday night as the audience applauded.

The AGORA Award is the highest honor bestowed by the city government, recognizing local residents who exhibit a special sense of community through their efforts to make it better. Mayor Jon Cawley called it the Above-And-Beyond Award, and Vaughn also received a customary key to the city, with last Friday designated Charlie Vaughn Day in Mount Airy. Observers point to his work on the $80 million Spencer's redevelopment, which was bedeviled by setbacks after the municipality bought the historic former textile mill complex in 2014. Vaughn became volunteer project construction coordinator in 2018.

Spencer's success stories now include the construction of the Balladeer By Marriott Hotel in a former textile building, the nearly complete Granstone Conference Center on a nearby site, upscale apartments and a new restaurant. Public Works Director Mitch Williams said Vaughn's knowledge of construction methods and Mount Airy infrastructure is unmatched, calling him friendly, professional and honest. Commissioners praised him as a visionary who will leave a long legacy, and Vaughn said simply that the team figured out what it had to do and jumped in and did it.
