FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA. — There’s nothing quite like a county fair — livestock, food, rides, games, funnel cakes and enough fried food to make your cardiologist nervous.
But this year, there may be one attraction nobody asked for:
The Heat.
With temperatures soaring, the big question around the Franklin County Agricultural Fair is whether Mother Nature is keeping folks away.
The fair is rolling out its usual lineup of attractions, but when the thermometer starts looking more like a scoreboard, even the biggest fair fan may think twice before heading out into the sunshine.
After all, there are only so many ways to enjoy a corn dog while simultaneously trying not to melt.
The heat can be especially challenging for families with young children, older adults and anyone spending extended periods walking around the fairgrounds. And while the rides may be spinning, some potential fairgoers could be deciding that an air-conditioned living room isn't such a bad attraction after all.
So, is the heat keeping everyone away?
That's the question being asked as the fair continues.
The real answer will likely come down to the crowds — and whether people are willing to sweat for a funnel cake.
One thing is certain: the Franklin County Agricultural Fair may have plenty of competition this year, and it isn't coming from another county fair.
It's coming from the thermometer.
Bring sunscreen. Bring water. Bring a fan. And maybe bring a towel.
Because apparently, attending the fair this year could qualify as cardio.
