hey served their country, defended our freedoms, and many returned home to continue serving their communities. Now, Henry County and the City of Martinsville want to make sure those sacrifices and contributions don't go unnoticed.

Nominations are officially open for the 2026 Outstanding Military Veteran Award, recognizing a deserving veteran who has demonstrated exceptional service to both the nation and the local community.

The award was established in 2009 by the Henry County Board of Supervisors at the suggestion of then-Board member Debra Buchanan.

Each year, a selection committee chooses an individual who best represents the meaning of service, sacrifice, and dedication to others.

KNOW A VETERAN WHO DESERVES RECOGNITION?

Residents are encouraged to nominate military veterans who have made a lasting difference through their military service and continued involvement in the community.

Nomination forms are available through:

Henry County's website: www.henrycountyva.gov

City of Martinsville's website: www.martinsville-va.gov

Henry County Administrator's Office

Martinsville City Manager's Office

DEADLINE APPROACHING!

All nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Monday, October 26, 2026, at either the County Administrator's Office or the City Manager's Office.

The award recipient is scheduled to be announced during the Veterans Day Service at the HJDB Event Center on November 11 at 11 a.m.

Since the program began, numerous distinguished veterans have received the honor, including 2025 recipient John Rehder, 2024 recipient Paul Shively, and 2023 recipient Vincent G. Penn.

Other past honorees include military veterans who have contributed to the Martinsville-Henry County community through years of public service, leadership, and volunteer efforts.

A CHANCE TO SAY THANK YOU

For many military veterans, service doesn't end when they take off the uniform. They continue making a difference in neighborhoods, churches, civic organizations, and throughout the community.

This award provides an opportunity to recognize those individuals while they can receive the appreciation they deserve.

If you know a veteran who has gone above and beyond, don't assume someone else will nominate them. Take a few minutes and submit their name before the deadline.

For additional information, contact the Henry County Administrator's Office or the Martinsville City Manager's Office.
