In the Mount Airy Board of Education at-large race, Republican Kyle Leonard stood at 1,763 votes after all votes were tallied Tuesday night, just 19 ahead of Democrat Tim Matthews.
Because the margin is less than one percent, the race could be headed for a recount between what was essentially a contest between two incumbents. Both were already on the school board, but Leonard had moved from the district he lived in when first elected, so he was seeking the at-large seat already held by Matthews.
Nearly 24 hours after polls closed, several races remained too close to call, including that school board seat and the 5th District congressional race.
