Mount Airy Mayor Jon Cawley won reelection with more than 60 percent of the vote, holding off a challenge from county commissioner Bill Goins. Cawley recorded 2,042 votes to 1,230 for Goins, along with 23 write-in ballots.
In the North Ward commissioners race, incumbent Chad Hutchens retained his seat with 2,082 votes, outdistancing challenger Wes Parker's 898, along with 22 write-ins.
Both city races were non-partisan and were decided alongside a tight Mount Airy Board of Education at-large contest and statewide and congressional races on Tuesday's ballot. Goins, who chairs the Surry County Board of Commissioners, had campaigned on public safety, economic development, a lower tax rate and housing.
