Rep. Virginia Foxx was on the verge of losing the 5th Congressional District seat she has held for more than two decades, with Democrat Chuck Hubbard ahead by 99 votes as counting continued into Wednesday.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, Hubbard stood at 139,034 votes and Foxx at 138,935, with independent candidate Robert Luffman at 7,529. More than 99 percent of precincts had been counted, with roughly 1,900 votes still uncounted, according to NBC News election coverage.
In a statement, Foxx said free and fair elections are a cornerstone of the republic and that the counting process has not ended under state law, noting military ballots may be outstanding and provisional ballots must still be counted. She said more than 1,000 provisional ballots were cast in the contest two years ago and that the process is expected to stretch into next week. Hubbard said the results came out extremely close, that the campaign will have to fight for the seat, and that he trusts the Board of Elections to complete its work correctly and fairly. Two years ago Foxx easily outdistanced Hubbard, 238,304 votes to 162,390.
