Several North Carolina families are racing against the clock to find new child care after learning their current facility will be closing soon.
Jayme Markham, a parent of two in Gastonia, says parents were told that Legacy Church owned the property and wanted it back for new projects, leaving families with only six weeks instead of the months usually spent on waitlists. He said some other daycares are too expensive, with one charging $360 per week for an infant, which was not feasible. Care.com's 2026 Cost of Care Report found the average parent spends at least 20% of their annual income on child care, and 31% tap into savings to pay for it. For parent Shannon Koeppel, it is not just about cost, saying the trust she built with her child's teachers means the most.
The church did not respond to a request for comment.
