The Quilt of Valor Foundation, whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts, was created in 2003. Since then, with the support of quilt guilds and quilters across the nation, more than 450,000 quilts have been created and presented to living veterans.
This year marks the 14th year the Surry Quilters Guild has participated in the Quilt of Valor program. Guild members from the surrounding area, including four from Stokes County, support the annual effort. This year, 26 quilters will present 97 quilts of valor, and 10 of the 97 were created by three quilters from Westfield. Over the years, the Surry Quilters Guild has created and presented a total of 701 quilts of valor.
Each quilt is created with deep respect and appreciation for the service member to whom it is dedicated. Quilt colors are usually red, white and blue, but quilters choose the pattern, purchase the fabric and spend hours creating the quilts. Most quilts require a minimum of 40 hours to create. The 2026 quilts will be presented at a special ceremony the Sunday before Veterans Day at Faith Baptist Church in Mount Airy. More information about the Quilt of Valor program is available at qovf.org.
