6 parks and rec items Martinsville-area families can use right now

Families in Martinsville and Henry County have a practical short list of recreation items they can use right now, with the freshest action item coming from the Smith River Sports Complex.

The complex says registration opened June 1, 2026, for the 2026 Piedmont Youth Soccer League fall rec season. The program is open to boys and girls ages 3 to 11, with an Aug. 3 deadline, games beginning Sept. 12, and the season scheduled to finish before Nov. 1. The posted fee is $65 for Tiny Canes and $80 for U6 and up, with sibling discounts available.

Families looking for something on the immediate weekly calendar can also note that the sports complex still has Smith River T-Ball Night listed for Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19. The same June calendar shows the Summer Passing League active this month, a useful reminder that the youth sports schedule is still moving through Axton.

For summer child care planning, the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA says camp enrollment is handled by appointment Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The YMCA asks families to complete the registration form and bring a current immunization record, a current physical exam signed by a healthcare provider, and a birth certificate. The posted upfront costs are a $50 registration fee and a $5 weekly deposit.

For low-cost outings, Henry County Parks and Recreation continues to keep several easy options in front of local families. The department highlights the Dick and Willie Rail Trail, a 10.7-mile paved trail for biking, walking and running. It also says geocaches are hidden in some county parks for the public to search, and notes that Summer Movies in the Park are held one Friday night a month in June, July and August at Jack Dalton Park. The county's programs page also says summer camps typically include art, bowling, baseball, basketball, golf, cooking, geocaching, tennis, crafts and nature activities.

Older residents still have dependable weekly options through county senior services. Henry County says the Tuesday Senior Cafe runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Henry County Recreation Center, and the county also offers transportation for eligible residents 60 and older with at least two business days notice.

One final planning note for this week: Henry County's official calendar shows the administration building closed Friday, June 19, 2026, for Juneteenth, so families needing parks-office help should try to make those calls before the holiday.

The best short version is simple: handle fall soccer registration now, use this week's T-ball dates if you need a live youth sports stop, keep the YMCA camp page handy for appointments, and lean on the rail trail and parks programs if you need a low-cost weekend plan.
