Rockingham County commissioners have adjusted compensation for two countywide elected offices.
The county says the Board of Commissioners acted during a June 22, 2026, special meeting to adjust the annual salaries of the Sheriff and the Register of Deeds. The changes took effect July 1, 2026.
Under the county notice, the sheriff's annual salary is now $167,417.43, and the register of deeds annual salary is now $124,080.29. The county says the adjustments provide cost-of-living increases aligned with those approved for county employees during Fiscal Years 2024-25 and 2025-26.
- What to know: The county says North Carolina law gives boards discretion over local-government compensation based on budget availability, organizational priorities and local policy.
- Who is affected: Rockingham County taxpayers, county employees, elected officials and residents following budget decisions.
- Why it matters: Elected-official compensation is a public-budget decision that residents can compare with employee pay policies and county service priorities.
Residents tracking county compensation and budget policy can review Board of Commissioners agendas and meeting materials for the underlying action and future personnel decisions.
