Roanoke drivers get I-81 and I-581 night-work alerts this week

Roanoke Valley drivers should expect the interstate work-zone pattern to continue this week, especially during overnight travel windows. VDOT's Salem District RoadWatch for May 22-29 lists multiple I-81 and I-581 items that can affect commuters, truck traffic and late-night trips.

On I-81, VDOT says lane closures may be in place northbound or southbound between mile markers 98 and 109 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The same notice says periodic slow rolls may be used in both directions for structural steel deliveries and beam setting, and the work-zone speed limit is reduced to 60 mph.

VDOT also lists bridge deck repairs on I-81 between mile markers 170 and 89, with right and left lane closures northbound and southbound during nighttime hours from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. On I-581, drivers may see intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Peters Creek Road between Valleypointe Parkway and Thirlane Road NW as work continues on the Exit 2N realignment and signal project.

For the Roanoke desk, the practical warning is to build in time and watch message boards. These are not one-off closures; they are overlapping pieces of a corridor construction season that affects interstate movement, local ramps and commercial travel through the valley.
