A mother is speaking out after she was convicted of child neglect for letting her 5-year-old son walk unsupervised in their gated Williamsburg community.
Karyann Parkinson, the mother of the 5-year-old, said the walk he took is a path he has taken many times, where he collects bird feathers along the side, and she stands by her decision to let him go by himself, saying she wants him to build little successes and learn he can conquer the trail. The June 5 incident made national headlines. The mother of five and recent William & Mary Law School graduate said she never imagined the decision would lead to criminal charges. Her son was not hurt, but after a neighborhood security guard escorted him home, police and child protective services came to the house, and an officer wrote in the criminal complaint that the child was found walking alone.
She told reporters she considers herself an adventurous parent but never expected law enforcement involvement.
