A Mount Tabor High School student is facing weapons charges after deputies found a large knife in his backpack on campus, authorities say.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says its school resource officer searched the juvenile around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday after several classmates reported the student was carrying a weapon and had made threats over the previous days, and found a large knife in the bookbag. The Department of Juvenile Justice issued a secure custody order charging the student with felony communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property and misdemeanor possessing a weapon on campus. The student was taken to a juvenile detention facility until a Thursday court appearance. The sheriff's office confirmed metal detectors were not used at the school that morning until students from three random classrooms were screened at 2:15 p.m.
Major J.A. Foster questioned why all middle and high school students are not screened every day, saying the safety of children and staff should be taken seriously. Anyone with information can contact the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office at 336-727-2112.
