A Winston-Salem woman has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for defrauding the elderly man she was hired to care for out of $100,000, prosecutors say.

Juanita Hairston Garris, of Hairston Home Care in Winston-Salem, was charged in July 2025 with obtaining property by false pretenses and exploiting a disabled or elder adult's trust. Police say Garris was hired in the fall of 2022 as the man's caretaker after he fell and needed help with daily activities, and soon began assisting him with writing checks. The Winston-Salem Police fraud unit says she wrote two checks to herself for $50,000 each, claiming the first was a bonus and the second was a gift. The victim was 100 years old at the time, according to the surveillance case.

In Forsyth County Superior Court on Wednesday, Judge L. Todd Burke consolidated the counts into one Class C felony and sentenced Garris to four years, two months to six years in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.
