This week in local recreation: free splash pads, youth signups and outdoor fun

June starts with several simple recreation options already live across Martinsville-Henry County and nearby Danville, and most of them are either free or low-cost for families trying to fill the first weeks of summer break.

Danville Parks and Recreation says its three free splash pads are now open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Ballou Park, Third Avenue Park and Doyle Thomas Park. That gives families an easy daytime option without needing a full pool outing, especially as June temperatures climb.

For structured youth activities, Danville's ENERGY Summer Program runs Monday through Thursday from June 1 through July 30, 2026, with free activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camp Grove Youth Center and Green Street Recreation Center. The city says lunch will be provided and registration is available on site, online or by phone.

Families looking ahead to sports signup still have a few weeks on Danville's football calendar. The city's official calendar says Youth Football League registration for ages 5 to 12 runs through July 14, 2026, costs $40 per player, and is based at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. Youth Football League Cheerleading also runs through July 14 for ages 5 to 12 at the same price.

On the Henry County side, the county's Trailblazer Challenge remains one of the better family-friendly outdoor options because it works on your own schedule. Participants visit 10 featured parks, complete photo prompts, then post with #TrailblazerChallengeHC and tag Henry County, Virginia, for a free challenge T-shirt after completion. Stops include Jack Dalton Park, the Dick & Willie Trail, Smith River Sports Complex and Philpott Marina.

If you want one more calendar item for this week, the Smith River Sports Complex lists Smith River T-Ball Night for Thursday, June 4, 2026, with games beginning at 6 p.m. at 1000 Irisburg Road in Axton.

The practical takeaway is straightforward: June 1 is a good day to lock in football registration, keep the free youth day program in mind, and use the splash pads or Trailblazer Challenge as easy low-planning outings.
