Drivers using the Blue Ridge Parkway near Roanoke and Explore Park should prepare for the active construction closure to move to a new three-mile segment.
The National Park Service says the parkway section from milepost 106 to milepost 112 reopened Friday, June 19. The closure is scheduled to shift on or after Monday, June 22, 2026, to the section from about milepost 112 at Virginia Route 24 to milepost 115 at the Roanoke River Parkway, the road serving Explore Park.
Roanoke County says access to Explore Park will remain available from the south. The National Park Service describes the work as pavement reconstruction, drainage repairs, signage and safety improvements.
- What to know: The closure location is changing, so an older detour plan may no longer match the active work zone.
- Who is affected: Parkway travelers, Explore Park visitors, cyclists and drivers connecting between Route 24 and the Roanoke River corridor.
- Driver action: Check the National Park Service road-status page before departure and follow posted detours.
The shift is weather and construction dependent. Travelers should verify the current closure limits before using the parkway.
