June starter guide: camps, fishing and family recreation plans now open

For families trying to lock in summer plans without waiting until the calendar fills up, several useful local parks and recreation options are already live across Martinsville, Henry County and Danville as of Monday, June 1, 2026.

In Martinsville, the Martinsville-Henry County YMCA is actively enrolling children for Summer Camp. The YMCA says parents should complete the registration form, schedule an enrollment appointment Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., pay a $50 registration fee and a $5 weekly deposit, and bring an immunization record, physical exam and birth certificate to the appointment. That makes it one of the clearest immediate signup items for local families still building out their June childcare plan.

In Danville, Mission: Impossible...ly Fun! Coates Day Camp continues through the summer with weekly options running from May through July at Coates Recreation Center. Danville Parks and Recreation lists the camp for children ages 5 to 12 who have completed kindergarten, with hours of 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., a cost of $160 per child, and a $10 deposit for each week. June week options listed by the city include June 1-5, June 8-12, June 15-18 and June 22-26.

Families wanting a shorter outing instead of a full camp week also have a couple of simple Danville options. The city calendar lists Free Fishing Friday on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Abreu-Grogan Park. For younger children, Danville also lists JUMP-Start Sports (Football) at Dan Daniel Memorial Park on Thursdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.. The program is for children ages 3 to 5, requires parent participation, and costs $5 per child.

On the Henry County side, families looking a little farther ahead can already put one of the area's bigger outdoor dates on the calendar. Smith River Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Monogram Foods Smith River Sports Complex in Axton, with free admission and parking. And for families who just want an easy no-registration plan this week, the City of Martinsville parks page points residents toward its 13 public parks and the 6.5-mile Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail as simple, low-cost outdoor options close to home.

The practical takeaway for June 1 is straightforward: book camp spots now if you need them, use Free Fishing Friday or JUMP-Start Football for a lighter outing, and keep Smith River Fest on the family calendar before summer weekends start disappearing.
