Families looking for low-cost recreation this week have several useful dates to keep in view, from Danville youth sports registration and river programs to Henry County's next outdoor movie and Greensboro's July parks events.
Danville youth sports: Danville Parks and Recreation lists Tuesday, July 14, as the registration deadline for both youth football and football cheerleading. The programs are posted for children ages 5-12, with a $40 fee and games running from late August into early November. The city's athletics page also lists fall youth baseball registration from July 7 through Aug. 10 for ages 5-12, also posted at $40.
Danville this week: The parks calendar shows Sunday Paddle on July 12, Adventure Camp III beginning July 13, and Mission: Impossible...ly Fun! Coates Day Camp for July 13-17. For a simple weeknight activity, Danville also lists Volleyball Skill Development Open Gym on Thursday, July 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Camp Grove Youth Center.
Henry County family night: Henry County Parks and Recreation's next Movies in the Park night is set for Friday, July 24, at Jack Dalton Park. The county says activities start at 7 p.m. with bingo, music and games, followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at about 8:45 p.m. Admission is free, with concessions available for purchase. The series continues Aug. 21 with The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
Smith River soccer: Smith River Sports Complex continues to list registration for the 2026 Piedmont Youth Soccer League fall recreation season. The program is open to boys and girls ages 3-11, with an Aug. 3 registration deadline, games beginning Sept. 12, and the season scheduled to finish before Nov. 1. Posted fees are $65 for Tiny Canes and $80 for U6 and older.
Greensboro parks month: Greensboro Parks and Recreation has several July items that work for families and active adults. The city lists Youth Volleyball Clinic for July 13-15 at Greensboro Sportsplex for ages 6-12, Movie in the Park on Saturday, July 18, at Hester Park with Zootopia 2, and Mountain Bike Mini Camp on July 21-23 at Lake Higgins for ages 8-13. Greensboro's lakes calendar also lists Lake Brandt Kayak Cleanup on July 14, Fishing for Fun at Country Park on July 16, and Summer Sunset Series at Lake Brandt Marina on July 28.
The short version: Danville families should check the July 14 football and cheer deadline first, Henry County families can plan for the July 24 free movie night, Smith River soccer families have until Aug. 3, and Greensboro has several parks-month options still ahead in July.
