Roanoke-area courthouse rules now cover phones, recording and dress

People visiting Roanoke-area courthouses should review new security and conduct rules before bringing phones, laptops, food or recording equipment into a court building.

Roanoke County says a new standing order took effect July 1, 2026, for the Roanoke County Courthouse, Roanoke City Courthouse and Salem Courthouse. The City of Roanoke Circuit Court page says the order was entered June 29 by judges of the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit.

The order allows visitors to possess many portable electronic devices, including phones, tablets, laptops and smart watches, but courtroom use can be limited and may require permission from the judge. Photography, audio recording, video recording and live streaming are not allowed without prior authorization.

  • What to know: Visitors are subject to security screening, and screening may include a personal search or a search of belongings.
  • Device limits: Portable electronic devices may be prohibited in certain Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court areas, and evidence from a device may require judge approval.
  • Visitor action: Dress appropriately, keep corridors clear, do not bring unsealed food or drink into court buildings, and ask court staff before using devices near a courtroom.

The rules matter for residents attending hearings, paying fines, filing documents, supporting family members or covering public court proceedings. Checking the order before arriving can prevent delays at screening or problems inside the building.
