June 2 family recreation cheat sheet: splash pads, football signups and easy outdoor plans

For local families trying to make the most of the first full week of June, several useful parks and recreation options are already live across Danville, Martinsville and Henry County as of Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The easiest no-planning option may be Danville's three splash pads, which the city lists as free and open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.. Families can use the splash pads at Ballou Park, Third Avenue Park and Doyle Thomas Park for a quick warm-weather outing without registration fees.

For households trying to lock in sports plans before summer gets away from them, Danville Parks and Recreation has several youth signups open at Dan Daniel Memorial Park through July 14. The city's calendar says Youth Football League registration is open for ages 5 to 12, with ages 5 and 6 playing flag football and ages 7 to 12 playing tackle. Youth Football League Cheerleading is also open for ages 5 to 12, and the separate Summer Youth Co-Ed Flag Football League is listed for ages 5 to 13. Each program is listed at $40 per child. Families can call 434-799-5214 for details.

Parents with younger children also have a lower-cost entry point this month. Danville's JUMP-Start Sports (Football) is scheduled for Thursdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Dan Daniel Memorial Park. The city says the program is for children ages 3 to 5, requires parent participation, and costs $5 per child.

For a free weekday option, Danville's ENERGY Summer Program is running Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through July 30 at both Camp Grove Youth Center and Green Street Recreation Center. The city says the program serves youth ages 5 to 15, there is no fee, and lunch is provided.

On the Henry County side, the county's Trailblazer Challenge remains one of the most practical built-in family activities because it can be done on your own schedule. Participants visit 10 featured parks, complete the posted photo prompts, and share their pictures on social media using #TrailblazerChallengeHC while tagging Henry County, Virginia. The county says finishers will receive a free Trailblazer Challenge T-shirt.

And for families who simply want a no-registration outdoor backup plan closer to Martinsville, the city points residents toward its 13 public parks and trail system, including the 6.5-mile Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail, the Philpott Lake Fitness Interpretive Trail and the Lauren Mountain Preserve Trail.

The practical takeaway for June 2 is simple: use the free splash pads and trails for easy same-day outings, and handle football, cheer or summer program registration now before mid-July deadlines start crowding the calendar.
