Families looking for low-stress local plans have several fresh parks and recreation options heading into early June across Martinsville and Henry County.
The Monogram Foods Smith River Sports Complex says registration opens Monday, June 1, 2026, for the 2026 PYSL Fall Rec Season. The complex also has a posted Smith River T-Ball Night on Thursday, June 4, 2026, with games beginning at 6 p.m. at 1000 Irisburg Road in Axton.
For families who want outdoor time without a formal signup, Henry County says the Dick and Willie Rail Trail is a 10.7-mile paved route for biking, walking, running, and rollerblading, with access points in Martinsville and at the sports complex. The City of Martinsville also points residents to the Dick and Willie Passage Rail Trail, the Philpott Lake Fitness Interpretive Trail, and Lauren Mountain Preserve Trail as current local options for a weekend walk or ride.
Henry County Parks and Recreation says Summer Movies in the Park return one Friday night each month in June, July, and August at Jack Dalton Park, and the department says summer camp offerings typically include art, bowling, baseball, basketball, golf, cooking, geocaching, tennis, crafts, and nature activities. For the latest camp and movie details, the county asks residents to call 276-634-4645.
Residents planning reunions or birthday gatherings can also use Martinsville's park rental system. The city says rentals are $30 for a half day or $50 for a full day, with a $15 key deposit, and reservations should be paid at least 10 days in advance. Rental availability can be checked at 276-403-5154.
The practical takeaway for this week is simple: if you need a kid-friendly June option close to home, Monday's soccer registration and Thursday's T-Ball Night are the clearest dated items, while the trails, park shelters, and county summer programs fill out the rest of the season.
