Free movies, summer camps and youth sports signups fill July parks calendar

Families in Martinsville, Henry County and Danville have several practical parks and recreation items to use over the next two weeks, including free outdoor entertainment, youth sports deadlines and low-cost activity days.

Henry County Parks and Recreation has the next free Movies in the Park night set for Friday, July 24, at Jack Dalton Park. The county says bingo, music and games begin at 7 p.m., followed by The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at about 8:45 p.m. Admission is free, concessions will be available for purchase, and families are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets.

Henry County summer programs also have several mid-July options still worth checking by phone. A Martinsville-Henry County Tourism camp roundup lists Archery for Beginners on July 14 for $10, Canoe Day on July 15 as free, Golf Camp on July 16 for $15, and Fishing Friday on July 17 as free. Later July options include Creek Crawl on July 28 for $10 and Tie-dye Day on July 29 for $10. The posted registration contact is 276-634-4645.

At Smith River Sports Complex, the July calendar shows Smith River Summer Passing League on Tuesday, July 14. The complex also continues to list fall Piedmont Youth Soccer League recreation soccer registration through Aug. 3 for boys and girls ages 3-11. Games are scheduled to begin Sept. 12, with posted fees of $65 for Tiny Canes and $80 for U6 and up.

In Danville, July 14 is a key youth sports deadline. Parks and Recreation lists youth football and youth football cheerleading registration through 5 p.m. for ages 5-12, with a posted fee of $40. Danville's fall youth baseball registration is also open July 7 through Aug. 10 for ages 5-12, with T-ball, coach-pitch and kid-pitch divisions at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.

Families looking for this week's Danville activities can also note indoor soccer July 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coates Recreation Center, Recreation Access and Programs from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Camp Grove and Green Street, and Sunday Zipline on July 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
