Roanoke walkers, runners and bicyclists using the Roanoke River Greenway should plan around an active closure near Piedmont Park.
The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation status feed lists a closure that began July 9, 2026, for a section of the Roanoke River Greenway between Piedmont Park and 9th Street. The posted reason is root removal and asphalt patching, and the end date is listed as to be determined.
The same alert feed also continues to flag a Wasena Park pedestrian bridge caution because of steel plates, plus an updated Little Main Street detour that routes users along Winchester Avenue SW, connects with 8th Street SW under the new Wasena Bridge, and rejoins the greenway at the Wiley Drive roundabout.
For daily greenway users, the practical advice is simple: check the Roanoke Parks and Recreation alert page before heading out, slow down near work zones and bridge plates, and follow the marked detour instead of trying to cut through the closed section.
